There’s a particular kind of silence that only exists in the Arctic.
You’re standing in the snow, layered up against a cold you’ve never felt before, eyes fixed on a pitch-black sky. And then it begins. A faint green glow on the horizon. It builds, ripples, and suddenly the entire sky is alive — curtains of green and violet light dancing above you, shifting and folding like something out of a dream.
That’s the Aurora Borealis. The Northern Lights. And for most people who see it, it doesn’t just live up to the hype — it quietly rearranges something inside them.
If chasing the Northern Lights has been sitting on your bucket list, this guide is for you. We’ll walk you through the best destinations to see the Aurora from India, when to go, what it costs, and how to give yourself the best possible chance of witnessing one of nature’s greatest shows.
And we know a thing or two about this — at IKIGAI, Northern Lights tours have been our signature offering for over a decade. We’ve taken hundreds of Indian travellers to stand beneath the Aurora across four countries. So consider this your honest, experience-backed starting point.
When Is the Best Time to See the Northern Lights?
The Aurora season runs from late September to early April.
This is when the Arctic experiences long, dark nights — and darkness is essential, because the Aurora is invisible against a bright sky. During the summer months, the far north has near-constant daylight, making the lights impossible to see no matter how active they are.
The sweet spot for most travellers is December to March. The nights are at their darkest and longest, the landscape is blanketed in snow, and the whole experience feels gloriously, unmistakably Arctic. The trade-off is that it’s also the coldest period — but with the right gear, the cold becomes part of the magic rather than a deterrent.
A crucial tip: stay at least 3 to 4 nights at your Aurora destination. Cloud cover and solar activity vary night to night. The more nights you give yourself, the higher your odds of a clear, active sky.
The Best Northern Lights Destinations for Indian Travellers
There are four destinations we take Indian travellers to — each with its own character, budget, and experience. Here’s an honest comparison to help you decide.
1. Murmansk, Russia — The Best Value and Our Specialty
If there’s one destination we know better than anyone, it’s Murmansk.
Murmansk is the largest city in the world north of the Arctic Circle, sitting deep in Russia’s Kola Peninsula. It’s one of the most reliable and — importantly for Indian travellers — most affordable places on earth to see the Northern Lights.
Here’s why Murmansk stands out:
It’s significantly cheaper than the Nordic countries. The same quality of Aurora experience in Finland, Norway, or Iceland can cost nearly double. For Indians watching their budget without wanting to compromise on the experience, Russia is unmatched value.
The visa is straightforward. Russia has become increasingly accessible for Indian travellers, and we handle the documentation guidance to make it smooth.
The experiences are extraordinary. Beyond the Aurora itself, Murmansk offers glass igloo stays at the Aurora Village, husky and reindeer sledding, snowmobiling, and a day trip to Teriberka — the breath-taking village on the edge of the Arctic Ocean made famous by the film Leviathan.
It’s dark, remote, and Aurora-active. Murmansk’s location and minimal light pollution give you genuinely excellent odds.
For most Indian travellers, Murmansk offers the best balance of cost, experience, and probability of seeing the lights. It’s the trip we’re most proud of — and the one we’ve perfected over years of running it.
2. Finland — The Cosy, Comfortable Classic
Finnish Lapland is the picture-postcard Aurora destination. Think snow-laden pine forests, Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, and the famous glass igloos of Saariselkä and Kakslauttanen.
Finland is wonderfully comfortable and well set up for tourism, with excellent infrastructure and a huge range of winter activities. It’s a fantastic choice if you want the polished, bucket-list Lapland experience — and you’re comfortable with a higher price tag than Russia.
But, it does come with the Schengen visa hassle.
3. Iceland — The Land of Fire and Ice
Iceland is unique because the Aurora is only half the attraction. This is a country of erupting geysers, thundering waterfalls, black sand beaches, glaciers, and the famous Blue Lagoon.
If you want a trip where the Northern Lights are the spectacular bonus on top of some of the most dramatic landscapes on the planet, Iceland is hard to beat. A self-drive or group road trip along the Ring Road is one of the great travel experiences anywhere.
The catch: Iceland’s weather is famously changeable, which can affect Aurora visibility, and it’s one of the more expensive destinations. But for sheer scenery, nothing compares.
4. Norway — The Most Dramatic Scenery
Northern Norway — particularly Tromsø and the Lofoten Islands — offers perhaps the most jaw-dropping backdrop for the Aurora. Imagine the Northern Lights reflecting off a still fjord, framed by snow-capped peaks plunging into the sea.
Norway combines excellent Aurora viewing with arguably the most beautiful Arctic landscapes in the world. It sits at the premium end of the spectrum, but for travellers who want scenery and Aurora in equal measure, it delivers.
Russia vs the Nordics: Which Should You Choose?
Here’s our honest take after years of running trips to all four:
If value matters most and you want the best experience for your money, Murmansk, Russia is the clear winner. You get a genuinely world-class Aurora experience, incredible add-on activities, and an easier-on-the-wallet trip.
If comfort and the classic Lapland fantasy are your priority, choose Finland.
If you want landscapes as the star of the show with the Aurora as a bonus, choose Iceland.
If you want the most dramatic Arctic scenery and don’t mind a premium price, choose Norway.
There’s no wrong answer — only the one that’s right for your budget and the kind of experience you’re after.
How Much Does a Northern Lights Trip from India Cost?
Costs vary significantly by destination. As a broad guide:
Russia (Murmansk) is the most affordable of the four, often costing considerably less than the Nordic options for a comparable number of nights and experiences.
Finland, Iceland, and Norway sit at the higher end, with Norway and Iceland typically being the most expensive due to the cost of living in these countries.
Beyond the trip fee, factor in international flights from India (not usually included so you can choose your own routing), visa costs, travel insurance, and personal spending. On our trips, we’re always upfront about exactly what’s included and what to budget for — no hidden surprises.
Why Go with a Group Instead of Planning Solo?
Chasing the Aurora in the Arctic isn’t quite like booking a beach holiday. The cold is extreme, the logistics are complex, the best viewing spots aren’t always obvious, and reading the Aurora forecast takes know-how.
Going with an experienced group takes all of that off your plate. At IKIGAI, our trips are led by a Genie and local experts who’ve done these routes many times — and they are those who know where to go, when to head out, and how to maximise your chances each night. You also travel with a small group of like-minded people, which means you’re never doing this alone — even if you arrive solo.
For most first-time Aurora travellers, this is the difference between a stressful DIY gamble and a once-in-a-lifetime experience you simply get to enjoy.
