Renting a car in Reykjavik is easy, seamless, and absolutely essential for exploring Iceland properly.

Where to pick up your car from?

You can pick up your rental car either from the Keflavík International Airport or in downtown Reykjavik. We highly recommend an airport pickup as it makes it easier to begin the road trip without relying on transfers.

What kind of car should you rent?

We strongly recommend a 4×4 vehicle, especially if you’re travelling between September and April because the roads can be icy, windy, and unpredictable. A 4×4 gives better grip, safety, and access to rougher scenic roads.

Day 01: Explore Reykjavik 

Your adventure begins in Reykjavik, Iceland’s charming capital. After picking up your car, explore the city on foot. Visit the iconic Hallgrímskirkja Church, stroll down the Rainbow Street, and walk along the harbour to the Sun Voyager sculpture.

Reykjavik evenings are cozy and lively. Enjoy your time at the famous bookstore that double up as a bar with live music. If the skies are clear, this could be your first chance to spot the Northern Lights.

Day 02: Drive to Hella

The real road adventure begins today as you start your drive along the legendary Golden Circle, a perfect introduction to Iceland’s geology. Walk through Thingvellir National Park. Scuba dive between the two tectonic plates. Witness the explosive power of Geysir, and hike the vibrant Kerið Crater.

End the day at Seljalandsfoss, where you can walk behind the waterfall before driving to Hella for the night.

Day 03: Drive to Vik

The South Coast is one of the most scenic stretches of the Ring Road. Stop at Skógafoss, visit Sólheimajökull Glacier for a hike, and walk across the black sands to the haunting Sólheimasandur plane crash site.

Arrive in Vík, home to the dramatic Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach and basalt columns crashing into the Atlantic.

Day 04: Drive to Höfn 

Drive to the east today and you’ll reach one of Iceland’s most surreal regions. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is the star with floating icebergs, glowing blue under the evening light. A sunset boat ride through the lagoon is unforgettable.

Just across the road lies Diamond Beach, where ice fragments sparkle like jewels on black sand. Optional ice cave tours are available today for those wanting dramatic glacier experiences.

Day 05: Drive to Egilsstadir 

The Eastfjords offer slow roads, coastal views, and fewer tourists. Stop at Vestrahorn, explore a Viking village, and drive along the scenic Laekjavík Coast with a break at Hvalnes Lighthouse.

This region is perfect for a peaceful Northern Lights hunt. 

Spend the night in Egilsstadir.

Day 06: Drive to Akureyri 

Today you drive through volcanic terrain and powerful waterfalls. Hike to Studlagil Canyon, feel the thunder of Dettifoss, and admire the elegance of Godafoss.

Explore Lake Mývatn and the steaming Námaskarð Pass before arriving in Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland. Adding an extra day here is good as it allows time to relax, café-hop, or explore nearby fjords.

Day 07: Drive ti Snæfellsnes Peninsula 

Often described as “Iceland in a nutshell,” Snæfellsnes has it all. Go whale watching, visit Grafarkirkja, Iceland’s oldest turf church, stop at a sheep farm, and explore dramatic coastal landscapes.

With minimal light pollution, this region is also excellent for Aurora sightings.

Day 08: Drive to Reykjavik 

On your final driving day, visit some of Iceland’s most photographed spots including the Kirkjufell Mountain, the coastal village of Arnarstapi, Búðakirkja Church, and Ytri-Tunga Beach, known for its resident seals.

Return to Reykjavik and end the journey at the Blue Lagoon. A late-evening soak is the perfect goodbye to Iceland.
